Regina enters her son's bed chamber to find him looking worriedly over his journals. "Henry," she asks softly, "what's wrong?"
He looks up at her, and she moves swiftly to his side when she sees that he is close to tears. "I was just thinking," he admits, "what would have happened if I had never believed. You know," he continues, clearing his throat, "a part of you must have not wanted the curse to work."
"What are you talking about?"
"You tried to stop me from believing, but not very hard, not really. I used to read about other children in that world whose parents kept them from believing. Some went through some really horrible punishments just so that they would think what their parents wanted them to. Even as the Evil Queen, or Madame Mayor, you were never that evil."
"I was very, very evil," Regina admits. Thank God she had never met Henry when she had been the Evil Queen truly, or her son wouldn't be alive today. She hugs him tightly to her. That possibility is terrifying, but she never really thought about the possibility that he might not have believed and what that might have caused to happen or kept from happening.
"You wouldn't have hurt me," Henry says, returning her hug just as tightly. "But what if I hadn't believed?" he asks. "I would never have broken the curse. I might never have even gone after my other mom."
Regina smiles. "It doesn't matter," she reassures him, "because you did believe."
"I didn't believe in New York. It took your kiss of True Love to make me really believe again."
"I missed you so much during that time."
He sighs. "I wish I could say I missed you too, Mom, but I didn't remember you. I didn't know you."
"I know," she replies softly. "It's okay." She strokes his soft, brown hair with a loving touch she had once thought she would never have again, the loving touch of a mother. "The curse would have been broken eventually any way," she adds, "and I can't imagine you never believing, Henry."
"I didn't in New York," he says again.
"Well, that was New York. We don't have to worry about that here. You'll never stop believing again. You never stopped believing in me, either, except for that time when you didn't know me."
He hugs her again, just as tight as before. "I'm glad I remembered."
"I am, too," Regina says. A long moment passes with the two just holding to each other as they remember both good times and bad. Finally, Regina breaks the silence. "It's time," she comments softly.
Henry sighs. "I don't know if I'm ready for this."
Regina pulls back to straighten his hair and then his collar. "Well, we are. Neither Emma or I want to reign any longer. It's time for us to settle down with our True Loves in our happily ever afters that we get to have because you first believed in us." She beams proudly at her son. "You saved us all so many times, Henry. You're going to be a wonderful King."
"You're not going anywhere, are you? Not you or my other Mom? Or my Grandmas?"
"No, Henry. We're all going to be right here around you and behind you." She can't resist patting his head reassuringly, despite the fact that he is going to be King in mere minutes. She can hear the fanfare beginning now. "We will always be here for anything you need, if it's questions or help or," she grins, "curses being broken or whatever. We'll always help you however you can. We're behind you one hundred percent."
He smiles, although he's clearly still nervous, and well he should be. He does have tremendous shoes to fill, after all, but he's got his whole family behind him. He can do this. With the True Love they share, he can do anything. "Then I guess I can be King," he says, though still reluctant.
"I know you can be," Regina beams, "and a more wonderful King the Enchanted Forest has never seen." She takes his hand in hers and leads him to where she can show him off to the whole world, all while never once leaving his side.
