John Smith was not the first white person Pocahontas had ever seen. Once there was another girl who ventured into her land, another girl different from others and yet like herself, and as she lays on the ground, her body still wound in a circle with his as the hawks fly above their heads, she remembers her. It's been a long time since she last thought of Aurora, but today, she lets her mind linger.
She was different from any one she had seen before. Like John, she had white skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes, but that was where the differences ended. She already seemed to know how to paint with the colors of the wind, and she knew and connected with some of the animals even better than Pocahontas herself. She had asked her to give her an Indian name, and Pocahontas had had trouble thinking of just one that would do. She was as fast as the hare, more beautiful than the loveliest of animals or sunrises Pocahontas had seen thus far, and kinder than any one she'd ever met.
Aurora's hands had been gentle whereas John's are hard with callouses and he has to sometimes slow his touch to keep his caresses gentle. Her skin was as soft as though she had never worked a day in her life, but yet Aurora had never attempted to steer clear of hard work. She had helped Pocahontas to mend many animals during her stay, had husked corn, and planted vegetables. She had even helped Pocahontas to mend her canoe once when she had touched her unexpectedly and Pocahontas had accidentally steered too close to rocks.
But Aurora had been far from just being about work, whereas Pocahontas knows that John's duty will soon pull him away from her. She had been a fun loving spirit. She had ran with the wind and danced with the butterflies. She had climbed mountains with Pocahontas, and they had ran side by side through the forest many times until collapsing onto the ground and rolling. John thinks he is Pocahontas' first lover, and she will tell him no differently, but the sweet loving she and Aurora had shared on the dirt and grass alike had taught the birds who watched them to sing new songs.
She feels the heat rise within her again. John Smith tugs at her hand, but for a moment longer, she lingers in her memories and pretends to be asleep. Aurora's laughter still comes to her sometimes in the melodic tinkle in Spring time breezes. The snow in the Winter reminds her of her soft, white skin, and sometimes when she kneads her fingers in the tallest of the cool, green grasses, she can remember what it felt like to have Aurora's long, blonde hair wrapped around her.
She wonders where the other Princess went. She would never have thought Aurora was a Princess as she claimed to live in a cabin with her aging Aunts somewhere in the woods, but her Grandmother Willow had whispered to her once that she was. She had warned her, too, as she's warned her already about John Smith.
The billowing, white clouds have brought again what could be disaster. Pocahontas already knows it will not last. Her father will drive John and the other white men away just as he drove away her little songbird who taught her so many new and interesting songs. He will never let her be happy. He will never let her choose her own lover. He wants her to marry Kocoum, but she will not be tied down to one so serious.
She wants a lover who can make her smile and laugh and who will join with her in all the things she loves to do. She wants one who isn't afraid of animals and who will help her care for her friends and brothers. She wants one who will be her perfect match in all the ways that matter. She had once dreamed that she and Aurora were those partners, but since John Smith has come into her life, she's not so sure.
She knows it is not Kocoum, however, and that whoever she chooses, she will have to fight to keep them. She would have fought for Aurora had she been given the opportunity, but her father had sent her away when Pocahontas had been toiling in the fields. She had known something was amiss and had been seeking a way out, but the way had come too late. She hunted for her but could never find her.
Now,however, she has been given a second chance and another white person to love. She can not find what these people offer her in people of her own kind. They are all far too serious and cruel hunters. They do not see the love and life all around them in the animal world that she does. They do not see love, do not believe in it,and she will not be tied down to their blindness and lack of belief. She will not be tied down to any rules with which she does not agree, rather it is her father's rules or the laws of the white man. She knows the majority of white men are also not loving people -- they are every bit as cruel and some crueler than her own kind --, but John Smith and Aurora are different. If she can not have one, she will surely fight to keep the other.
John is caressing her again, and she answers him finally, turning on her side, taking his hand, and kissing his fingertips. She would fight for John or Aurora, but her time with Aurora is past. She is long gone from her,so she will have to fight for John and fight she will, but for now, she does what she by far prefers and loves. Together, they teach the birds new songs again, and Pocahontas' heart soars on wings of freedom and love once more. This time, she prays it lasts, but already she knows it will not and he will become, no matter how hard she fights, just another beautiful, loving ghost in her past.
