"Hmm, that's interesting," Benton remarks, prompting Ray to look up at his reflection in the bathroom mirror.
He knows he shouldn't ask. He tells himself he knows better, and truly, he does. But, still, lowering his toothbrush from the twentieth time today of feverishly brushing his mouth, he questions, "What? One hundred and seventy six new fungi to lick?" He loves Benton -- truly, he does --, but having a mounty for a boyfriend, especially one who's always so eager to stick his tongue and teeth into places they should never be, is harrowing sometimes.
"No." Benton turns his book this way and that, clearly trying to gain a better inspection at something on the page. "Although you are accurate in the number of the position."
Ray spits, cleans his brush, and leaves the bathroom wrapped only in a towel. He pads over to where Fraser is still carefully examining the page and peeks over his well sculpted shoulder. Immediately, the detective's face goes red. "What kind of book is that?" he squeaks.
"One from my grandmother's private collection," is Benny's casual reply.
"Your grandmother," Ray questions in disbelief, "read books like that?"
"Why, yes, although I am not entirely certain how much actual reading she did in this particular volume."
Ray squeaks. "I bet your grandfather was happy with her!"
"Very. They had a long, happy marriage."
"I bet!"
"Ray?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you consider . . . trying this . . . ?"
Benton never gets to finish his question as Ray exclaims, "Oh, Hell, yeah!", grasps the mounty by his collar, and kisses him breathless. All thoughts of the fungi Benton sampled earlier that day are gone completely as Ray's towel drops to the floor and takes another peek at Fraser's grandmother's book to see just exactly how to proceed with what's to come next in Figure #176. Fraser's grandfather probably licked things he shouldn't have, too, but after seeing this book, Ray knows the old man died happy with his lover -- as he will, too, one day.
