Penelope leans over her granddaughter's shoulder, admiring her hard work as she carefully glues lace on a red heart. "Who's your special some one?"

"She's not a special some one, Grams!" Piper hurriedly exclaims, but then she reconsiders. "Well, not in that way, any way." She giggles.

Penny continues to survey Piper's work as she adds stars in a multitude of colors and lines of sparkling glitter. She's just finishing putting the final touches on her valentine, scrawling the words, "To the Best Sister in the Whole, Wide World" across the little card, when they hear voices coming from outside. Piper hurriedly puts away her art supplies, then bounces up and to the door.

Penelope acts busy again, dusting walls she never cleans, as she angles toward the door. She peeks out just in time to see Piper hand her older sister her homemade valentine. As Prue beams in delight, Piper's words echo in her grandmother's head. "She's not a special some one," she had said, but Penelope knows better.

She watches the sisters embrace, Prue's lips gently, fondly, and chastely brushing against Piper's long, black hair. One thinks she's styling while the other is shy and still in her braces. There is so much difference between the two and yet also so much that they share. Penelope smiles, watching the love they do not yet understand blossoming between them.

The world is going to be a harsh place for them one day, she knows, no matter how hard she tries to protect them. They'll be hated and feared if their powers ever come known. She's kept their powers from them, because it was what her daughter wanted, but she knows, one day, they'll find the Book and Phoebe will read the spell. She doesn't know where she'll be then, but she knows she won't be around. She fears the time will come when she'll no longer be able to protect them.

Not only will they be feared and hated for their powers, but hatred and fear will also meet their love, she knows. The world just doesn't understand Lesbians, let alone two sisters who love each other as dearly as they're going to come to do, but she does. Love bests all other powers, and the love Prue and Piper are going to share is going to be one of the grandest.

Tears sparkle in her eyes as she goes to fetch her own valentines for her girls. They have so much to learn, and they're going to experience so many perils from which she can not save them. But their love will save them. Their love will guide them, save them, and heal them when they think it impossible to go on. It will be the strongest force in their lives. Penny's just sorry she won't get to see it blossom fully, but at the same time, she's thankful they have each other. They'll be protecting one another long after she's gone, and one day even after then, she'll be able to hold them again, hold them and tell them how much she loves them and that she does understand. Even then, she knows, their love will shine brighter than almost any other power even in Heaven.

Penelope's fingers trace her girls' names on the valentines she's made for them, each endued with a secret spell to help them: Prue, a spell to bring her the right love, Piper, one for guidance, Phoebe, compassion for her sisters, and of course, protection for all three. "Oh, my girls," she whispers, beaming, "how you're going to love!"

She heads back to the kitchen and is just taking out trays of heart-shaped cookies when Prue and Piper walk in, buzzing with talk and laughter. She watches them intently, both young faces shining with the love they do not yet understand. When she holds out the tray, their fingers touch as they both reach for the same cookie. Piper pulls back her hand, but Prue takes the cookie and gives it to her sister before taking another for herself. "Happy Valentine's Day, girls," Penny says, beaming as she watches love unfold.
