Dark eyes flash up as laughter resounds just beyond the door closed to the outside world. Pale hands tighten on a warm mug. "Hey, Joyce, got any more marshmallows?"
She laughs, but there's no sting in her laughter. She's pretty in the soft glow of the living room lights; he can see where Buffy got her looks. "More? Spike, your cup's -- "
"They're just so good," he persists quickly, "and I could use a refill, if you don't mind."
Then the door knob's turning, and Joyce's smile takes on a knowing air. "It's okay," she manages to say just before the door swings open, and they're faced with what he's known all night would be inevitable. The man now standing in the doorway is the very reason why he's here tonight. He puts down his cup of cocoa, his eyes zeroing in on the enemy.
"Spike, I didn't know you were . . . coming over tonight. This is my Dad."
"I know who he is," Spike returns, his voice colder than he intended.
The human's eyebrows rise up a notch. "Dating that much younger than you, Joyce?"
"He's not my boyfriend!"
Spike's still glowering at the man who dumped the first, mortal woman to show him true kindness when an idea sparks. He glances at the Slayer, who's sending him thunderous, warning looks, and is just about to reach for her mother's hand when Joyce speaks again. Her tone is calm and reassuring, but it's not directed at the bloke who was stupid enough to leave her. She's speaking to him, and her hand is touching his. "It's okay, Spike."
His gaze turns back to her. It's not okay. The words are on the tip of his tongue, but her eyes are pleading with him not to make a scene. He doesn't want to make this any harder on it than it has to be, and perhaps what he's thinking now would be the wrong direction -- although he would love to lean across the coffee table and really make that stupid bloke's mouth fall open. He'd deserve it, too, for leaving a woman like Joyce.
"Spike!" Buffy adds forcibly.
Spike finally stands, wipes his hands on his black jeans, and faces the man who's unworthy of calling any of the three females present his. He's unworthy, but then, so, too, is Spike. It's just for very different reasons. "Name's Spike, obviously, and no, I'm not dating your girl."
Hank's eyes move to Joyce in what Spike thinks may well be the man's first moment of regret. "She's not my girl any longer," he says, but Spike's eyes still flash in warning as they shake hands. He pumps Hank's hand with enough strength to let him know that he's fully capable of backing up his warning.
"Mom, let's take the cocoa to the kitchen."
"It's okay, Dawnie."
"I want a cup," the younger girl whines, and Joyce moves to fix it for her. Spike lets half of his mouth twist into a cocky grin. The Nibblet's smart. Clearly, she and Buffy got both their looks and their brains from their mother. Spike eyes the last member of their family. He's now met them all, but Hank Summers is the only one he never wants to see again.
He waits until the other two are safe in the kitchen, then turns on the heels of his boots and strides boldly after them. A challenge hangs in the air behind him, and he gives in to a full, satisfied grin as he hears Hank babbling a goodbye to his daughter. He knows he'll catch it later, but that's fine. Slayer'll be bitching at him for one reason or another, any way. At least, that wanker won't be around to bother Joyce any longer tonight. He's got his scent now, and he'll make sure he never catches her alone again.
