It's been just another day for Clark, with the exceptions of racing away from school twice, once to save Metropolis and the second time to save the world, when he dumps his book bag onto the living room sofa. He's got tons of homework tonight, and he'll find a way to get it done. He can't ask Chloe to do all his work for him, after all. He'll zip through the chores and then see to his homework, but it means he won't get to visit Lex tonight.

Maybe he'll drop in on him while he's asleep, he thinks, trying to find a way to fit the billionaire into his hectic schedule. The thought brings a smile to his lips as he heads for the kitchen, intent on grabbing one of his mother's homemade snacks before hitting the hay, literally. He tenses suddenly as his ears catch whispers.

"Sh! He's coming!"

"What? Should I hide?"

His father's laughter resounds in the kitchen until his mother scolds, "Hush, Jonathan!"

"With his hearing, he's probably already heard us."

Clark smirks but hesitates a moment, letting them think they're still catching him by surprise, his hand on the kitchen door. Then he pushes in and actually stumbles back a little as the four people who mean the most to him holler out, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CLARK!"

He blinks in obvious surprise at the chocolate cake with seventeen candles. "I -- I -- "

"Don't tell me you forgot your own birthday, kiddo," Jonathan speaks kiddingly, throwing an arm around his son, but the rest of the room knows Clark really has.

"Clark," Lex speaks softly at the same time that Chloe hurriedly comments, "It's okay. You might've forgotten your birthday, but we haven't."

His mother steps forward and hugs him. "And we never will."

There's something strange in Jonathan's eyes as he looks down at his son. "Tell me you didn't," he requests.

Clark shakes his head, not willing to admit something that might upset his father, and, thinking quickly, admits instead, "I'm just surprised you invited Lex, is all."

Jonathan clears his throat and shifts his gaze. He rocks back on the heels of his cowboy boots. "Well, hum, he is an important -- " He can't bring himself to say any word that would come close to describing his son's relationship with the young man he still believes will break his heart. "He's important to you, Clark."

"He is very much so," Clark admits, beaming, and hugs his dad before chastely kissing Lex's cheek.

Lex beams. Chloe laughs, catching the pink slightly tingeing the world famous bachelor's cheeks. "Now blow out your candles."

Clark eyes his cake again but steps forward.

"It's all right, Clark."

"What's wrong?" Chloe asks, forehead wrinkling.

"Oh, it's nothing much," Martha replies. "It's just that when Clark was four years old, he blew out his candles and kinda destroyed the cake."

Chloe's eyes go round while Lex and Jonathan hide their smiles. "I made him another one, of course," Martha concludes, "but he still hasn't forgotten that."

"Go ahead, Clark," urges Lex while secretly remembering when his boyfriend accidentally blew his bedroom door off its hinges.

Clark smiles, surrounded by the people he loves. They've already given him far better presents than anything he could unwrap. The simple fact that Lex is here, standing beside him, accepted as a part of their group, is really one of the best things for which he could ever hope. Lex touches his elbow softly. His parents and best friend beam at him. Clark blows out the candles, his birthday wish already made real.

"Oh, Clark, before I forget," Chloe says, handing him a stack of papers, "here are tonight's assignments already done in your handwriting."

Clark's mouth works; no sound comes out.

Jonathan clasps his shoulder. "It's okay, son. Tonight only."

"Those other children may have a lot of other things to do, too, Clark, but none of them saved the world today. One day off won't kill you."

It's Clark turn to blush. Martha takes the homework from Chloe who winks at Clark. "Knock yourself out, birthday boy," she says, and he would, but he's already got everything he could ever want.

The End
