"The museum?" Buffy stops in her jubilant tracks as Giles again speaks, his voice full of the prim, stiff, and proper British man she had thought him upon their first meeting. "You are taking me to the Sunnydale museum?"
She whirls to face him and takes her lollipop out of her mouth. "You don't like it?" she asks in earnest surprise. She had thought a place like the museum would play right into Giles' interests! Thinking that perhaps he thinks he's seen all they have to offer, she tells him brightly, "They're showing a special presentation on Thomas Edison today."
"Edison? That pretentious windbag who claimed so many others' inventions for himself?!"
"I take it you don't like Edison?" Buffy asks in surprise, then shoves her lollipop back into her mouth at Giles' thundering glower before she can say something else she might regret. Slowly drawing it back out of her mouth, she asks, "Okaaaay. Where would you like to go instead?"
He stops, mouth still open to declare all of Edison's faults and lies, and purses his lips together in thought. He rakes over the few possibilities Sunnydale has to offer. Each image is more disturbing than the last until he recalls something he heard Willow mention earlier that week, "I, hum, I hear the library is having a book sale."
"A book sale?" Buffy repeats dumbfounded, again drawing her lollipop out of her mouth. "All the books you already have and you want more?"
"I . . . " He almost blushes. "I do hear they are having what Miss Rosenberg called a bag sale, a whole bag for a dollar."
Buffy grins, biting back the urge to roll her eyes. She wanted this, she reminds herself. She wants him, and part of hanging out with him is going to be trying to find common interests. "Okay," she agrees. "We'll go to the library -- I guess you can call it a book mall --, and you can knock yourself out. Then I'll take you to the real mall."
It's Giles' turn to again bite back a shudder as Buffy spins on the heels of her boots and bounces happily toward his old car. He wanted this, he reminds himself. He wants her and would love to show her a hundred better things to put into her hot, little mouth rather than that accursed lollipop.
He blushes at the mere thought, then hurries after her before she can change her mind and become wise to the fact that he's far too old to be the person with whom she chooses to spend her extra time. He knows this is wrong, but he does need to get to know his Slayer better. A trip to the mall, as much as he begrudges the place, will allow him to see her in her natural habitat. He smiles at the thought but knows already she can not possibly be any more beautiful there than she already is every time she smiles at him.
