It's been years since they've been together, and yet he still feels him every day. There are times when his presence is so strong that Charles can almost believe he can reach out and touch him. Indeed, he does, but it's only his mind touching his now. His fingers have not touched his flesh in years, not even in battle. Sometimes, he'll brush against his cape or even grip his helmet, but he never gets to actually touch him any longer.

But there's one day a year on which Erik still comes to him that Charles can forget he can not actually touch him. The distance, both in years and in miles, falls away like magic, and he's there beside him again. He's stooping low before him, his fingers on his face. He massages every place he touches, and like the facts, their clothes and even Charles' chair simply disappear.

He takes his time, fingers drifting over him being replaced by slow, sensual, and hot lips. He massages each place on Charles' body, taking his time and loving him right, and replaces his fingers every time with his lips. it starts with Charles' temples and the smooth scope of his hairless head and moves all the way down to his toes. It's the one time Charles can again feel something in his legs, just as it is also the one time he can forget that none of this is actually happening.

It's not just a dream, but it's also not reality. Erik is shut away some place whose location is unknown to Xavier, but he's shut away for a reason. He can not let Charles come to him for he knows their presence in each other's lives will only lead to more fighting, but he also will not allow himself to be disturbed or otherwise hindered from sending these motions to his old friend who's also so much more. They've both taken girlfriends since the time they were together, but they've never really loved another. Their hearts, even after all these years, still belong to each other.

Erik has to concentrate to send his strokes to Charles, but Charles, shut away from his students in his office, receives each one as clearly and vibrantly as if Erik's own hands were upon his flesh. He moans as his psychic strokes run lower, and his legs twitch with the remembered feelings of his hands upon them. They take their time, anywhere from hours to all day.

When Erik's invisible fingers touch him in the certain, secret spots of which only he and Charles know, Charles feels like singing. It's Erik's music that radiates throughout his being, filling him to his very soul, but when he moves to his erected manhood, it's not the feeling of Erik's ghostly fingers grazing over him that he feels. He feels his lips touch him reverently at first and then with more passion. He feels him open and wrap around him. He feels himself feel his lover, and every time he does, he screams.

His pleasured scream echoes across the mansion. Wolverine slashes through another Sentinel in the Danger Room. Ororo flies higher; Bishop grins his gun. Remy flicks another card. Rogue clutches her teddy bear and muffles her sobs in his plush at all that can not be. Jean grabs her husband and silences her own emotions in Scott's mouth, her heart aching for Charles, because every year shortly after he screams, Charles begins to float back down.

He floats back down to harsh reality, to a room in which Erik is not, to a life wherein they can only be enemies. He floats back down, and Erik's not to be found. His mind searches desperately for his, but he's pulled away from him again as he does year after year. He won't find him for months for although they still love each other, they're both wise enough to understand that they can not be together.

They can not be together, and yet, they can not stay apart. Charles checks often on Erik throughout the year. Sometimes, Erik reaches back, but always, every year on this night, he searches for Charles. He links with him and gives of himself until he can give no more and lays in his solitude, crying for a love that can not be and yet also can not stop and wishing, with all his heart, that the man he still loves after all this time and, they both know, always will will have a joyous birthday and many, many more years.

He may not be able to be with him through these years, but yet, he is always there. He's always there for Charles as Charles is for him, each always loving the other and yet both knowing they can never again be together. And yet, every year, as Erik strokes Charles until he screams his pleasure out at the top of his lungs and his mind on this day, he whispers, I love you. His voice resonates in Charles' mind as he falls back down, his own mental voice crying out despite his tears, I love you! And yet, every year, those words are the last things to which Charles clings as he finally cries himself to sleep on his birthday.
