They say the greatest heroes still have their weaknesses. She's not one of the greats, but she has become, in her own right, a pretty kick ass Slayer. Still, she knows a lot of what's made her so successful are the very people her enemies would like to use against her. Creatures like Vampires and Demons see love as a weakness, but up until now, it's helped her to win some of her hardest fights.

But now . . . Now, she's beginning to think they may be right. Now she's staring at a man broken because he loved her when she couldn't love him in return. Now she's staring at a beautiful creature who she doesn't know how to help. Now she's staring at what might very well be her greatest weakness. If they're right, and love is a weakness, then surely he is hers.

She steps to him in the darkness, moving slowly so as not to frighten him. He whimpers and pulls away. "It's okay, Spike," she calls to him. "It's okay. It's only me."

But for how much longer? she wonders as she works on coaxing him into letting her come close. How much longer can she keep his return a secret? How much longer can she hide him underneath here? How much longer until the First ravages his mind completely or until her enemies find him and finish breaking him? How much longer until her friends find out she's hiding him and turn from her in disgust? Even Willow isn't going to understand this time.

He's shaking. Tears are running down his face. "B-Buffy?" he whimpers her name as though she alone has the power to save him.

"Yes. Yes, it's me, and I brought dinner." She never found it disgusting when she fed Angel, but yet she's bothered by the bag of blood she's carrying now. It's not because he's any less than what Angel was when he returned to her from Hell, or so she tells herself. She still doesn't know what's happened to him. She can't begin to even register a guess except for one thing -- He's got his soul now, and it didn't take a Gypsy to curse him to give him one.

She opens the bag and lets the blood flow. His fangs gnash at the drops falling toward him, but she knows it's only because he's so hungry -- or so she tells herself. She'd thought she'd finally began to know who and what she was, but now, she's no longer so sure. Now, she feels again like she's got only questions and no answers.

She feeds him slowly, not wanting to choke him, and when the bag is empty, she crumples it up and moves away. She's almost to the stairs when he calls out to her again. "B-Buffy?"

She turns back, uncertain, as she always is these nights, what to expect. "Th-Thank you."

She smiles as her eyes meet. Her heart flutters. "Thank you." All this time he's spent trying to become a better man has all been for her. All he's suffered in his efforts has been because of her. He wants so badly to be worthy of her love. Perhaps he never will be, or perhaps she's the one unworthy to love him. She doesn't know. Everything's so confusing right now.

But she does know one thing as she chooses not to continue walking away from him. She sinks onto the last step of the staircase that leads from the school down here into the dark dungeon and watches over him. Maybe he is her greatest weakness. They'll try to exploit him. She knows they will when they find him, but let them come.

Her hand grips her stake not because of him but because of their enemies. Let them come after her, after him. Let them come try to exploit her "weakness". They'll find her waiting, and they'll find out that a woman in love is the most dangerous Slayer yet. Maybe he doesn't deserve her. Maybe she doesn't deserve him, but she's going to fight just as hard for him as he has for her.

She's still watching over him as her tired eyes slip slowly closed. His blue eyes seem so big in this darkness. He really is a beautiful creature, she thinks, even with the blood smearing his chin. The Slayer slips off to sleep, still holding her stake, but the girl inside dreams again at last of a love worthy to fight for.
