"Come on, Buff! You've got to have one!"

"No, I don't," Buffy argues. "Xander, if there's anything being a Slayer has taught me, it's that our plans rarely work out the way we expect. I can't even have a birthday party without it being interrupted with some Big Bad or apocalypse or -- "

"Yeah," Xander points out, "but we've learned to expect that."

Buffy glowers at him. "Touché," she acknowledges dryly. "Come on, Wills," she says, looking at her other best friend for support. "Help me out here. You don't have a resolution."

"Sure I do."

"What? You?"

Willow shrugs. "It is tradition."

"As untraditional as we all are -- "

"But it's traditional for us Wiccas too. Only our new year actually started back on Samhain."

"So what's your resolution, Will?" asks Xander. "Maybe Buffy can learn a thing or two."

"Xander!"

He shrugs.

With a small smile of acceptance, Willow begins to explain the resolutions she set for herself two months prior. "I want to keep learning about my Craft to become a better Witch but also while staying away from the dark stuff." Nobody notices that Spike inclines his head in a slight nod at those words. "I need to be more patient with myself and others, which," Willow adds, looking pointedly at Buffy and Xander, "we could all learn from. And . . . " She pauses, her voice dropping to a soft whisper. "I . . . " She looks down at her feet. "I need to let Tara rest."

"Wills -- " Buffy's eyes shimmer with unshed tears.

Xander moves fast, leaving the couch where Dawn has dozed off to sit beside the one person who's always loved him, even before the Slayer came into their lives. He wraps his arms securely around her even as she's telling them, "I'm okay. Really."

He shrugs, not moving his arms his new hugging position around her. "I'm cold. Warm me."

She laughs, shakes her head, and finally leans into his embrace. She returns his hug and stays cuddled in his arms, her head resting on his shoulder. They look expectantly back at Buffy.

"So you have ours," Xander resumes. "What's yours?"

"I . . . I told you I don't have one. I guess I could say to be the best Slayer I can be, but that's a given. I want to stay alive and keep you guys alive."

"You will," Spike speaks up quietly from where he's sitting on the floor and leaning back against her chair.

"What about you?" she asks, her fingers brushing over his leather clad shoulder.

"What about me?" he returns almost flippantly.

Buffy cocks her head and looks down at him with a smirk that says plainly that she knows he's playing with them and has been listening to everything that's been said. Spike shrugs around the unlit cigarette in his mouth. Normally, he wouldn't mind smoking around them, but Dawn, having been suffering from a cold lately, has asked him enough times not to smoke around them, that he's finally decided to respect the Nibblet's request. "Sure I do, luv," he finally answers but doesn't elaborate.

Buffy tilts her head further, curious now. "What is it?" she finally asks when he still doesn't expand his answer.

"To love you best I can."

His simple answer melts her heart. Xander secretly takes a mental note on yet another way to keep a girlfriend happy as Dawn lets them know she's all woke up by commenting, "Aw."

Even Willow smiles. "You know, I'm glad you guys are together." She shakes her head, her short, red hair brushing over Xander's Christmas sweater. "I never thought I would be, but I am."

Spike looks away from them all. "Enough of this mush," he mutters, embarrassed. "Isn't there a villain to fight somewhere?"

Giles strides into the room. "As a matter of fact," he says, "there is. I just received a call from an old colleague." As he relays the message and explains the next Demon they'll be facing, Buffy looks around the room at the people in it: the handsome Vampire sitting at her feet, the best friends any girl could ever have still cuddling across from them, the kid sister she once thought she never wanted, and the aging man who has become more of a father to her than her own father ever chose to be. These people are more than her friends, she knows. They're her family maybe not by blood but in every other sense of the word and more so than any blood kin she ever had.

Her eyes moisten as she remembers Spike's answer and Willow's too. Her own words echo in her mind. Spike reaches up, closes his fingers gently around her hand, and squeezes her lightly even as finally resolves to make a resolution she knows she'd fight tooth and nail to keep regardless of rather she officially set it or not. She's going to keep being the best Slayer she can be not for the world or even for herself but for these people around her. She's going to keep saving the world so that they can all keep living in it together. She's going to keep being all she can be so that she gets to spend more time being with them and loving them. She's going to protect her family no matter what year it is or even if one day she finds herself powerless again. She's still going to protect them. She's always going to protect them, and she's always going to love every single person in this room.

"What?" Willow asks, watching Buffy's intent, moist gaze.

"Nothing." Buffy shakes her head.

"That's not a 'nothing' look," Xander says. "That's definitely a 'something' look."

Buffy shakes her head again. "Nothing," she insists. "I just . . . I just love you guys, okay? All of you," she adds, looking at Xander and Willow first, then down at Spike, up at Giles, and finally over at Dawnie.

"Aw."

"We love you too, Buffster."

"Are you sure you didn't spike that eggnog, Xander?"

"I'm sure!"

Giles whisks his glasses off of his face and starts cleaning them.

Spike chuckles. "Come on," he says, getting to his feet in one smooth and graceful roll and tugging on Buffy's hand. "Let's go kill this Demon so we can stop with the mush and get on with this new year." New Year's Eve used to hold no meaning for him. Once you've seen fifty or so turns of the year, they tend to lose their special meaning. But this one does. He looks at the woman by whose side he's proud to live, fight, and love and with whom he'll be starting the new year, and he knows it's all about her. "Come on," he urges.

Buffy laughs. "You started it."

He shrugs. "Just the truth, pet. Now let's go kick ass."

The End
