"It's a sign of the apocalypse," one woman whispers, shocked.

"It's a sign of the end of times," another person agrees, watching the special branch of the military fan out.

The man in the center of it all pays none of them any attention. He ignores their gawking stares and the hatred he could easily feel burning from their eyes if he was to look at them. They're not worth his attention, and even if they normally would have been, there's only one thing in the world that matters to Lex Luthor right now.

He climbs into the seat of his giant, yellow robot and begins clearing away any debris, carefully picking through piece after piece. His people shout back and forth to one another as they help him search, but Lex ignores them too. Unless they find him before he does, they are of no use to him.

His breath catches as he spots a piece of tattered, red cloth. He lifts another piece of debris, but it's only a piece of Superman's cape that goes fluttering in the wind the moment it's freed. He picks up another piece and another, hoping the fragment of cape means he's on the right path but still afraid he won't be in time.

Piece by piece, he meticulously shifts through the leveled buildings. Heroes and other rescue workers come and go, but Lex barely notices any of them. He just keeps digging, digging and looking, looking and barely daring to hope. The crowd behind him eventually thins, but Lex barely notices them or the flurry of photographs the press continues to snap.

But there are still enough people gathered to shout when he uncovers Superman's body. Still enough people to yell so loudly that Lex can barely hear his own heart hammering, barely hear his breath catch, barely hear the plea he almost doesn't stop from escaping his lips. Be alive, he thinks. Be alive. Be alive. Be alive. Be alive.

It's a steady mantra trumpeting through his brain as he jumps from his robot and runs to the world's hero who, to him, will always be Clark, the boy he fell deeply in love with so many years ago. He barely refrains from shouting his name as he gathers his weakened body to him. He checks immediately for a heartbeat and breathes an open sigh of relief when he finds one.

"L-Lex?" Clark's eyes open and then shut again.

"Sh. It's all right. Just rest. You got 'em. You saved the world again." But I almost lost you in the process.

The cameras are still snapping, but for once Lex doesn't let that stop him from pressing a kiss to Clark's temple. "It's going to be all right," he tells them both, never hearing the applause behind him or realizing that, through the cameras' lenses, some people are starting to realize that his quick arrival to help wasn't a sign of the apocalypse after all but rather a sign of love.
