Character Name:
TV Show: Modern Family

Character Background: Gay fathers Cam and Mitch have been planning to add a boy to their little family for a while now after adopting their first daughter from Korea. Their plans are mostly centered on adopting from a foreign country, which is something I myself get a little tired of and am sure I'm not the only one. There are millions of kids right here in the US who need help, who need a loving home and family, and these two men would make terrific fathers for any one of them.

So what if something did happen closer to home to make a child available for the guys? When an ugly hate crime strikes a Lesbian couple, their adopted child is left needing a home again. It's no secret that the guys have had trouble with Lesbians in the past, but we gays rather need each other, rather we're gay, bisexual, transgender, whatever. We've all felt the pain of prejudice, and that gives us common bonds already. When the boys learn of the hate crime, they, and the rest of their family, are vastly upset, but when they attend the funeral and learn of the nine year-old girl about to be thrust into an uncaring foster system, their hearts break even more.

Always the sensitive one, Cam is the first to speak about the possibility of adopting her, but Mitch still wants a boy. It's Gloria who sees the strength in a girl who could have easily been from her homeland and the possibilities of giving her the love she needs, but of course with her own new baby, a growing son, and Jay, she's already got a little more on her plate than she can handle at times. She and Claire come up with a plan: They collect donations for the child and enlist Mitch to help Gloria take them to the orphanage.

Their visit can not be better timed as they walk in on the other children picking on young Isabelle because of her parents. Mitch gives one of his "infamous" gay rights speeches, like the ones he's known to give on airplanes. He's thanked by one of the orphanage volunteers, but when she mentions that she knows Isabelle will be faced with more prejudice and taunts and perhaps it is best that she be transferred somewhere where no one knows her story, Mitch decides Cam is right.

Their adoption of the child far from solves everything, however, for it turns out that Isabelle has a considerable chip on her shoulder. The guys' combination of gentle and tough loves eventually turns Isabelle toward them, but not before she runs away. It's Mitch who finds her at her parents' graves, and Mitch into whose arms she at last collapses, crying her little eyes out.

Casting: I'm generally not a fan of human children, regardless of rather they're characters, actors, or little brats I actually encounter in person, but Isabelle caught my attention on the short-lived Killer Women. Like Henry of Once Upon A Time, she seemed a child who possessed more wisdom, talent and soul much older than her actual age. Her character was smart, too, without being a smart ass. She's a quite talented young lady, and with Killer Women folding so soon, she could use a new job. With her style, talent, personality, and genuine smarts, I think she'd fit in perfectly with the Modern Family cast.
